og:image bookmarklet

Show the picture you saw in the feed

What it does

Articles declare a “share image” (og:image, twitter:image, JSON-LD image) that Google Discover, Facebook, X, LinkedIn… show in their cards. Many sites never display that picture in the article itself — you tap an interesting photo and it’s gone.

Run this bookmarklet on the article: it overlays every declared share image, full size, with its dimensions, an Open image link and a Copy URL button. It also re-reads the page as the server sent it, in case scripts removed the tags. Tap it again, tap outside or press Esc to close. Nothing leaves your browser.

Install on desktop (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)

  1. Show the bookmarks bar (Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + B).
  2. Drag the 🖼 og:image button above onto the bookmarks bar.
  3. On any article, click the bookmark.

Chrome on Android / iOS — the easy way: sync from desktop

Mobile Chrome can’t drag links into bookmarks and makes editing a bookmark’s URL tedious. Let sync do it.

  1. On desktop Chrome, be signed in to the same Google profile as on your phone, with sync on and Bookmarks included (chrome://settings/syncSetup → Manage what you sync).
  2. Install it on desktop as above (drag to the bookmarks bar). Keep the name short and unique — rename it to e.g. ogimg (right-click → Edit) so it’s easy to summon on the phone.
  3. Wait a minute: it appears on the phone under Bookmarks → Bookmarks bar.
  4. To run it on mobile: on the article, tap the address bar, type ogimg, and tap the bookmark suggestion (the one with the star / bookmark icon) in the dropdown.
Opening it from the Bookmarks screen does not work — Chrome only runs javascript: bookmarks launched from the address bar.
Install directly on the phone (no desktop)
  1. Tap Copy bookmarklet code above.
  2. Bookmark this page (⋮ → ☆).
  3. Open Bookmarks, long-press the new bookmark → Edit. Set the name to ogimg and replace the URL with the copied code (it starts with javascript:). Save.
  4. Run it from the address bar, as above. On iOS Safari, run it from the Bookmarks list directly.

If copying doesn’t work, select all the code here:
